Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital

Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital is proud to announce we are working on becoming a Cat Friendly Practice in accordance with the AAFP (The American Association of Feline Practitioners) guidelines. This means that we are making changes to decrease stress and provide a more calming environment for our feline patients. Our staff has also been trained in feline-friendly handling and understanding cat behavior in order to increase the quality of care for your cat.

The AAFP seeks to encourage and facilitate good quality veterinary care for cats. At Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital, we recognize that there are unique challenges and difficulties in bringing your cat to a veterinary practice, including:

  • Cats often do not travel well.
  • Cats do not feel safe when they are away from their normal home territory.
  • Cats are highly sensitive to unusual sights, sounds and smells.
  • Most cats prefer quiet and solitude.
  • Most cats are highly susceptible to stress and anxiety.
  • Most cats are highly stressed by dogs and other cats being in close proximity at the practice.
  • Cats need to be handled gently, with care and respect in the practice.
  • Cats have unique medical requirements that Cat Friendly Practices are capable of providing.

The AAFP created the Cat Friendly Practice program to help veterinary practices meet the wide range of unique needs of cats in a veterinary practice setting. An extensive self-assessment checklist was designed to demonstrate that Cat Friendly Practices:

  • Understand the unique needs of cats and have made veterinary visits more cat-friendly.
  • Understand how to approach and handle cats in a gentle, empathetic and caring manner.
  • Have appropriate equipment needed to diagnose and treat feline diseases.
  • Meet a standard for the facilities and care for hospitalized cats.

It can be stressful for both the cat and the cat owner to visit the veterinarian. The visit starts before you even arrive at the veterinary clinic with trying to get your cat in the carrier and the car ride to the practice and continues until hours after you return home. The kind, caring team at Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital would like to help all of our feline patients and their owners make this the most relaxed and pleasant time possible.

Please call us at 605-348-6510 or email us to make an appointment or if you have any questions about how we can help make your cat's visit to the veterinarian a good experience.
